Seneca's Brick Streets
Courier Democrat May 8 1919,

The following appeared in the  Courier Democrat May 8 1919, There are many articles in the early couriers which seen to go to great length to inform the  public as to the procedure of moving ahead in the building of the city of Seneca. The question I would ask is how long would it have taken if this article had not appeared n the paper, and how much would it have cost ten years later.

What are we going to do about street paving this spring? Looking out on the mud this week one views with alarm the disposition of a few to always live on muddy streets. With the county folk clamoring for hard surfaced roads, with the soldier boys coming home from poverty stricken France where they have had good roads for thousands of years, can we in this town afford to fold our hands and patiently await for something to happen? Let's wake up!

The main objection to paving it seems is the fear that it is going to cost too much with the present prices of material and scarcity of labor, A good reason for going slowly but we must proceed. The present city administration is pledged to economy and we believe that the Mayor and City Council will not spend the people's money foolishly nor impose taxes that will be beyond anyone's means to pay. That would be injustice.

The first step is the circulation of petitions. Someone must circulate the petition among property owners. Then if the petitions receive a sufficient number of signatures, present them to the City Council. The Council will then act. The first step will be to establish a drainage system that will carry off the water from Main Street after rains and snow fall, If we cannot do more, let's take Care of the drainage this year. Paving is not an idle dream. If Seneca is to compete for trade with other towns, with hard surfaced roads coming up to our very doors, We must have good permanent streets. Take it easy if we must, but move right along, get behind your mayor and council by signing the petitions when they are presented.
